How to Have a Great Board Meeting
A great board meeting could be a vital element to the success of your business. But many companies fall into the trap of «if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it» thinking when they hold their board meetings. This can result in unproductive and boring meetings that aren’t generating outcomes for the company. This article will provide tips to have a productive, engaging, and effective board meeting that will make your business more successful.
Set the tone for your board meeting at the beginning and closing. A strong opening and a strong close will set the tone for the remainder of the meeting, creating cohesion among board members. Additionally meeting the board in a different location (a venue for meetings or a restaurant, for example) can easily energize conversations.
Limit the number of major subjects to be discussed at a time. This will help to keep the discussion focused on the most important issues for the business.
Use a polling app or survey to measure the effectiveness of meetings. This will allow you to know exactly who is taking up too much space, and those who aren’t speaking up enough. Knowing who is speaking too much can help you effectively redirect the conversation at the proper time.
Allow discussion of items that aren’t on the agenda, however, be sure to follow up. This will allow the board members to speak and ensure that the most important issues are not diminished by unnecessary diversions.
