OpenVPN For Android Vs OpenVPN Connect
Openvpn for android is a free app that runs on any device running Android 4.x (Ice Cream Sandwich) or later. It utilizes the Android system’s API and doesn’t require many permissions. Openvpn for Android does not function as an actual VPN itself, but an application that connects to an VPN. There must be an active server on the other side of the line’ in order for it to work.
You’ll need a NordVPN account and the NordVPN application installed on your device, as well as the necessary config files to connect to your server. Our recommended VPN providers make this easy by providing downloadable config files for all of their locations. Download the config file on your phone or computer and then transfer it to your device by using the USB/SD-card/Dropbox. Once the file is on your device, you can install the free OpenVPN Connect application by Arne Schwabe from the Google Play Store.
OpenVPN Connect is the «official» client from the OpenVPN Inc company and is designed to be very user-friendly for novice VPN users with no technical expertise. It’s also less feature-rich than the openvpn android which is designed for more advanced users. Both apps let you connect to any VPN that supports the OpenVPN Protocol, however openvpn android provides a more user-friendly interface and can be used on a larger variety of devices. It also facilitates features like dynamic IP addresses and split tunneling which are not available in the official OpenVPN Connect app.
